Isn’t it strange… For some women, getting pregnant just happens. They don’t even have to think about it, they go to bed one night, and wake up the next morning ‘with child!’ How does this happen!
For many of us, getting pregnant just isn’t that simple. We spend years avoiding pregnancy as a teenager, always hoping and praying with fingers crossed that it won’t happen to us. And then when we are finally settled, happy in our lives and we long to slide into motherhood, it just doesn’t happen!
So why is it so hard to get pregnant?
Despite what we are led to believe all through our younger years (I suppose most views are enforced onto us to avoid many teenage pregnancies!) Getting pregnant isn’t that simple. Even if we are in peek physical fitness, the perfect age, and totally healthy (reproduction wise) We still only have a 25 to 30 % chance of getting pregnant. And this lowers significantly as we get older!
So what can we do as women to improve our chances of conception?
Firstly you have to know when you’re ovulating, there are a few methods that can help you to learn your body’s signs of ovulation, from ovulation kits to measuring changes in your cervical mucus, to learning how to take your basal body temperature.
Then once you have that sussed, there are other things that you can do in your life, to make it easier to ‘make a baby’
- You should try to be as healthy as possible, this includes eating a sensible and healthy diet.
- You should aim to get in shape. If you’re overweight you have less chance of getting pregnant.
- No smoking, recreational drugs, and no alcohol. If you are prescribed any drugs by your doctor, you should tell him you are trying to get pregnant.
- Some vitamins are recommended and are said to help with conception. Do check with your GP or pharmacist.
- Some people have sworn that hypnosis helped them to get pregnant. This could be due to the relaxation technique that some hypnotists teach.
- Acupuncture, although there is no proof, some people swear by these little needles.
- And last but not least. Stress – If you are stressed you are less likely to conceive. Stress can alter our body’s natural rhythm. If you’re stressing about trying to get pregnant, then you are doing yourself no good at all. Try to relax more, you will find baby making more fun and less of a chore if you learn to relax!
There are lots of things that you can do to try and increase your chances of pregnancy, from positions that are more favourable, to the time of the day to have sex!
It is all much easier though when it’s not just a routine to try and get pregnant, keep it fun, keep it relaxed, and best of all… enjoy yourself.
It took me 3 years to get pregnant with my first child. The longer time went on, the more stressed I got about wanting to be a Mum!
After 3 years we decided we would never have children, and as soon as I stopped being hung up on being pregnant – It happened! I was pregnant!
